My fastlege stated she’s uncomfortable with prescribing ADHD medication unless I continue PEth-testing

Legen krever peth.

I will start by saying I haven’t commited any crime, didn’t drive drunk or loose my license, I had alcohol problem and there were lot of reasons to it, ranging from depression to love life. I have heavily abused alochol for 8-9 months and lost my job.

Around the same time I was diagnosed with ADHD and was required to show clean tests for 3 months – which I did.
After this, I was asked to test for another 3 months and stay within «moderat forbruk» – which I did.

After this my fastlege stated she’s uncomfortable with prescribing my ADHD medication unless I continue testing.

I was very disappointed but I understood why so I went with it. This was now 1 year ago and I don’t feel comfortable with testing anymore. I should add during this year I have stayed within «low moderate».

Its been a total of 1,5 year and I find this very invasive. Another problems in facing is.

The half life of peth in heavy drinkers is about 4 days, while the half life of peth among moderate drinkers ranges from 8-12(14)days. This makes it impossible for me to estimate how much I can drink, so I stopped.

This is extremely invasive and is heavily affecting my social life and ny new social circle.

I can’t go out and have a beer without worrying on how it will affect the test. Please advice, I feel stuck and this affects my mental health.

First of all, we understand very well that this would feel frustrating for you.

From what you’re writing, it is not clear to us whether the doctor demands these tests because of your ADHD medication use in itself, or if this has to do with the general health requirements for having a driver’s licence (with regards to your past), or both. Nevertheless, in both cases the doctor technically has a right to demand these tests if she believes they are neccessary.

The question then, may be this: is this a reasonable demand from the doctor? This is of course debatable, and if you haven’t done so already, you could try addressing this with her directly. If you explain to her in a calm manner how this is affecting your life negatively, it is not entirely inconceivable that she would understand, and eventually step down the degree of testing. Maybe.

If this does not work however, you could try contacting Pasient- og brukerombudet. They provide guidance councelling for patients in the health care system, and are very familiar with what rights you have.

Alternatively, you can consider changing doctor (this can be done twice a year).
